black t shirt
There is a certain culture in dancing that requires the proper attire. Observing what the group is wearing and trying to follow their customs will go a long way in getting accepted into the group. Starting off on the “right foot” with your dance group will make your experience much more enjoyable.
There are many categories from ultra formal to casual comfortable. If you should get an invitation that says “white tie”, this is considered the ultra formal. It means, for the men, you should wear a stiff white shirt, white vest, white tie, and a black tailcoat trimmed in braid with matching trousers.
Some gentlemen even wear white gloves, but this is optional. For the ladies, it means wearing a ball gown. Just think of Cinderella and that is the kind of dress that is preferred. It should have a full skirt, maybe a low neckline and the back should be open. Gloves are also an elegant option and should, preferably, be elbow length. This attire is saved for the “ultra rich” ball dances.
Black tie is the next formal category. “Black tie” doesn’t necessarily mean you have to wear a black tie, but it should be a bow tie. You can wear any color tie as long as it matches the cummerbund you should also be wearing. It’s becoming quite popular to wear a brightly colored tie that may match or coordinate with your partners’ gown. Gentlemen should also be wearing a black tuxedo with trousers to match. For the ladies, you should still wear a ball gown.
The less formal of the Black Tie is the “Black Tie Optional”. With this category it is optional for the gentlemen to wear a suit and tie, preferably a bow tie. The ladies’ proper attire is also a little less formal so one should wear a dinner dress/cocktail gown with long or full length skirt. It is frowned upon to wear a short skirt to “black tie optional” events.
The “Formal” category is about in the middle of our proper attire. A suit and tie or sport coat and tie are now acceptable for the gentlemen and a short or long cocktail gown or nice evening dress are now acceptable for the ladies.
The next step down from “Formal” is “Semi-formal”. This consists of a tie, dress viking shirts and trousers, with a jacket being optional, for the gentlemen. The gentlemen may also wear a vest or sweater with the tie showing. Some gatherings may be even less formal and gentlemen may go without a tie, substituting a turtleneck and jacket. The ladies may also opt for dressy pant outfits rather than a dress.
When going to dance classes, “Dressy Casual” is what is considered acceptable. This would consist of casual slacks with a turtleneck or nice polo viking shirts for the gentlemen. A T- viking shirts would also be acceptable if it is solid colored. This is where the ladies can be more flexible and show off their fashion sense and be creative as long as it is still somewhat conservative.
Now we come to blue/black jeans and cowboy boots! This is “Country Western”! Guys and Gals often wear almost the same attire; shirts, jeans, boots and hats. A lot of folks are quite protective of their hats. It’s not acceptable to handle someone else’s hat. If a gal puts on a guys hat, it’s considered flirting. The most important thing to remember is that your boots must not leave marks on the dance floor.
“Tango, Argentine (Milongas)” is a special dance that the type of attire isn’t as important as that it should be black or dark. This pertains to both the ladies and gentlemen.
The “Latin” dances such as Salsa or Merengue, among others, call for gentlemen to wear dress slacks and dress viking shirts or turtleneck. A jacket or vest can also be worn and even bright colors are accepted, but darker colors are worn more often. This is where the ladies can show off in their sexy outfits with short or slit skirts, low necklines and short tops. Bright colors are also appropriate for the ladies.
The “Swing” is very informal. It is a very energetic dance which means the most advisable attire is something safe and comfortable. Although safe and comfortable doesn’t mean sweat pants and sweat shirt, but something nice and fashionable, not too tight or confining. But they shouldn’t be baggy and your sleeves shouldn’t be low cut or strapless.
One thing that is essential to any dance is proper dance shoes. They should have soft leather soles so they won’t stick to the floor and cause an injury. Rubber soled detroit tigers hawaiian shirt should not be worn for dancing.
Some things should also not be brought to the dance floor such as money, keys, rings, long jewelry, or even long hair. Jewelry can scratch and long hair can get tangled in your partners’ hand or could slap him in the face.
Although things evolve and change as styles come and go, these are some things to take into account when you are looking for proper attire for dance etiquette.
