I don’t know about you, but the new fall advertisements have got me feeling really anxious. The sight of leather, cashmere, faux fur, knotty knits, tweed and opaque tights are a friendly reminder of just how much I love autumn!
Like most of you, I am not totally ready to let go of my favorite summer staple pieces but the time of the year has come when I get bombarded with questions regarding the transition of a summer wardrobe to fall. It can be a little challenging but when it comes to fashion who isn’t up for a little challenge? There was a time when a whimsical floral or an abstract print summer dress was relegated to spring and summer, but it’s time to let go of those old faux pas and let that dress live a few more months. My suggestion leans toward dresses that have a neutral base, like black, grey, taupe or khaki. You could top it off with a fitted leather jacket or a structured knit cardigan.
And depending on the neck line and the fit of the dress you could layer it with a thin turtleneck underneath. If the hemline has some nice movement you can also try putting the turtleneck on top and belting it at the waist so that you have the appearance of a turtleneck and a beautiful patterned skirt. To polish this wonderful juxtaposition of soft and whimsical with substantial fall textures, don’t forget to break out your favorite boots and opaque tights.
Another summer staple piece that you can let live beyond August is the soft t-shirt, which is a great layering piece in both long sleeve and short. You can wear them under your favorite suits, under a faux fur vest, and with your favorite wool pencil skirt or trousers. The great thing about the soft tee is that you can layer it to look more substantial without creating bulk. I must say that this is one of my favorite pieces for my fall transition. You could also wear your layered tee with your favorite fedora or knit hat to give it a little edge and seasonal flair.
Lastly, I’d like to talk about cargo pants which where a big trend this year. Cargo pants can also make a real hip segue to fall. The important fact with this trend is that you should only wear them in rich fall colors, like khaki, brown, navy, or black and do not wear them in linen or sheer cotton. Paired with sweaters, layered t-shirts or a turtleneck and a pair of booties cargo pants can become a cool fall staple.
Be daring, have fun and lets all use this time to maximize what we already own as we mix them with new and exciting fall pieces.
