Blocks: Approximately 13.5cm square
Make the Blocks
Cut four 15cm squares from patterned fabric and two from plain. Lay them out in a ‘T’ shape so that you have a strip of four squares with one shape either side of the second square.
Snip a 5mm x 5mm piece from each corner of the two squares that form the arms of the ‘T’ then sew the four whole squares together with right sides together to make a line.
Sew the two cornered squares onto the line of four squares to secure them in place, then repeat steps 1-3 to make two more stitched ‘T’ shapes.
Embellish with Die-Cut Shapes
Decide which fabrics you would like to use for your letters and motifs (you will need to choose a contrasting print to the square that you plan to secure the shape to) then fix fusible webbing to the back of each one. From these fabrics die-cut two A shapes, two of B and two of C.
Die-cut one acorn and leaf motif to accompany the A, one butterfly for B and two ice cream cone, cherries and sprinkles motifs for C, trimming the bottom of the cone shapes to turn them into a cupcakes.
Place the motifs onto the right sides of the stitched ‘T’ shapes, then when you are happy with their arrangement, iron them into position.
Assemble the Blocks
With wrong sides facing outermost, bring the squares of your ‘T’ shape together to form a cube. Stitch the sides into position starting with those nearest the cornered squares and continue sewing all of the edges, leaving a 5cm gap along the last side.
Carefully turn the cube through, then poke out the corners with a knitting needle or a pencil. To finish, push toy stuffing into the 5cm opening of the cube until it feels firm then slip stitch the gap closed. Repeat for the remaining ‘T’ shapes.
