‘Writer’s block’ as a layman’s term, you must have heard that term often enough and wondered what it is? And why is it so scary for a writer?
Writers block as the term suggests is a state of fear or anxiety. It can be a fear of failure as a writer or it can be a fear that what you have written is not good enough to be published. As to why is it scary because sometimes it can be days without a written word and that’s really scary for a writer whose bread and butter depends on it.
So now the question is how to cure this writer’s block. Here are ten simple ways to cure it.
When and if you find yourself staring at the blank screen or paper just get up from there, sit in a comfortable position, and start meditating. Concentrate on your breathing, and while you are at it think about something that made you emotional. And by emotional it can be anything – whether it made you happy, sad, crying, and laughing. Revisit your past and feel those emotions again but with an objectivity of a knowledgeable person. After sometime open your eyes and write about those feelings you will be surprised by the flow of words.
Reading is very important for a writer. Not only it keeps us informed about the world and his wife, it also increases our vocabulary, keeps us away from the writers block. Read anything that you can lay your hands on – books, novels, magazines, fliers, brochures, sign boards, posters. You never know from where the inspiration will strike you on your head and you will be heading to your PC to capture that inspiration into a beautiful medley of words.
3. Take a walk
Walking is another way to cure a writers’ block and it is a tried and tested method of curing it. When you are stuck close whatever you have been doing, put on your walking shoes, and go for a walk. Take the route which you would normally avoid and keep your notepad or your Dictaphone with you so that you can record your experience.
4. Talk to your friend
How long it has been since you called up your friend just to say hi to them? Call them now and let the discussion take its own course from there. Ask them about themselves, their family, their work, and anything under the sun. People usually warm up to genuine queries about themselves and open up easily. Not only this exercise will be beneficial for you but unknowingly you might have helped a friend who was waiting for an ear to listen to his/her problems.
5. Visit a nearby store
When you feel that you are facing a writer’s block just get up, get dressed, and go to the nearby departmental store. While doing some purchase observe the buying habits of various people and take it down in your notepad. Talk to the salesperson about the various brands of your favorite product, or just ask them about themselves. Talk to the cashier about their life, family or even their work and voila you have some new characters for your story or new ideas to work on for your article.
Networking is very important for any profession and more so for writers. As it is from the life the great stories and writings have been inspired. So exchange ideas with anyone and everyone in your area — from the garbage collector to liftman to the cleaning lady to your neighbors, to pizza delivery boy. The idea is to talk and know their opinions about life in general.
7. Watch a movie
Yes watch a movie as it can be quite relaxing to your overstressed mind. And while watching a movie plan your story. Imagine that the characters in the movie are your characters, how would you want them to behave in a certain sequence in a movie. If you have been the scriptwriter what angle would the story had taken? Plan all this and write it down in your notepad and then develop it into a full story with your characters.
8. Exit your comfort zone and think out of the box
Too often writers get stuck in their comfort zone like if they are writing a fiction they will stick to fiction and that too a particular genre in fiction. Come out of your comfort zone and think about different genre. If you have been writing romantic then try romantic thrillers and if you have been writing romantic thrillers then try writing action thrillers.
9. Talk to your characters
You have planned your characters but you are not able to take the story forward so what do you do? Start talking to your characters as if they were real people with real problems. Interview them or just hold a casual imaginary chat with them. Ask your characters some questions and then thinking from their perspective answer those questions. But ensure to write both questions as well as the answers.
10. Visit a park
When you feel there is a lack of inspiration in or around your home; then get out and visit a nearby park. Not only it will be relaxing to see children playing but also it might just get your brain ticking with some ideas. Watch other visitors. What are they doing – are they taking a walk, or simply sitting with friends and chatting. And be sure to write everything you see and then come back and develop that into either a scene or a short story.
11. Work on something else
Alright you have tried everything under the sun to cure the writer’s block and you are still not able to write a word. Then just shut the PC and start working on something else. It can be anything from cleaning your wardrobe to lawn mowing. Doing these mechanical chores gives a rest to your mind and your mind starts contemplating on the story and when you finish your task you would find yourself dying to switch on your PC and start typing.
Other than the above mentioned tips the best way to cure your writer’s block is to write. Yes write through the block, don’t stop to read or edit what you have written just keep writing and it will surely cure the writer’s block.
