A real leather belt when brand new is often tough and in need of loosening up. As a belt can be a really expensive fashion accessory it benefits to put in the time and effort needed to take proper care of it. This ensures a belt gives you a life-time of use. There are several different methods that can be used to soften a belt to make its easier to manipulate and sit more comfortably on the waist or hip line. Here are some the simple ways to loosen up a belt without damaging it in anyway.
Rubbing Alcohol – use any brand of isopropyl rubbing alcohol which is freely available at most grocery or drug stores. With the belt rolled out full length on a solid surface, coat a cotton ball with the rubbing alcohol and rub it along the rear face of the belt. Use as many cotton balls as required to give a good coating and ensure the alcohol soaks into the leather.
Vaseline – similar to using the rubbing alcohol, Vaseline can also be used to loosen a leather belt, although instead of using one or two balls of cotton it is often easier to use your finders to cover the surface of the belt. A benefit to using Vaseline is its ability to soften the leather, as well as to loosen.
Coconut Oil – if using this method it helps to warm the belt first, an easy way to do this is the leave the belt out in the sun for ten minutes or so. With the belt warmed to the ideal temperature, you can start to rub the coconut oil into the belt using your fingers once again. Continue this until the complete surface of the belt is well oiled. A potential downside to this softening method is that the color of the belt could be darkened; this shouldn’t be a problem on an already dark-colored belt but might not be so good if you wish to maintain the color of a light-colored belt.
Commercial Products – there are a wide variety of specialist products on the market that can help with softening and conditioning leather-based products. These commercial products are perfect for all-types of leather products ranging from the waist belts, purses, wallets to shoes or even horse saddles. An extra feature to using these types of softeners is their ability to also strengthen and water-proof the leather.
