Timberland’s story began all the way back in 1918 in a small Boston, Massachusetts shoe company, The Abington Shoe Company, where it’s founder, Nathan Swartz, started his bootmaking career as an apprentice stitcher. He cut leather, stitched seams, attached soles and learned how to craft fine leather goods with his own hands.

Timberland Women’s 14″ Premium In 1955, he bought the interest in the company and welcomed his sons to join him and for nearly ten years, the Swartz family made shoes for leading manufacturers together. Early in the 1960’s, they introduced one of the first waterproof leather boots using the so-called injection-molding technology wherein the soles are fused to leather uppers without stitching, a first in the footwear industry during that time.

Timberland boots are not only waterproof but are made up of premium materials with smooth, full-grain leather uppers, glove-leather lining, thermal microfiber and closed-cell foam to keep the feet dry and warm. Some of the added features include a padded collar, rustproof hardware and durable laces made of Taslan fibers, while the midsole is made up of polyurethane construction bonded to a durable rubber lug outsole and fiberglass shank.

It’s first venture into the international market was in Italy where it was first launched under Sidney Swartz’ reign and leadership. Then, Timberland clothing and women’s footwear were introduced. In 1989, Timberland aided in bringing young people from diverse backgrounds together by being the founding sponsor of the Boston-based “urban Peace Corps” City Year for a year of full time community service. A year later, bold ideas like the Path of Service program began entitling Timberland employees to 40 hours of paid time-off to serve in their communities.

In 1998, the Timberland PRO series of “Workboots for the Professional” was launched delivering a promise of long lasting durability, comfort and fit.

Later on, Jeffrey Swartz took over the driver’s seat and turned Timberland into a twenty-first century example for socially responsible corporations around the world continuing the legacy that his grandfather and father built throughout the years.
